Apaches Fall to South Plains Lady Texans in Herb Richardson Classic Opener
Tyler, Texas- The Tyler Junior College Apaches faced a tough challenge in their opening game of the Herb Richardson Classic, falling 55-76 to the South Plains Lady Texans.
The Apaches came out strong in the first quarter, taking a 22-18 lead over the Texans. Kyra Anderson and Monica Bottley led the charge with aggressive drives to the basket, showing off their ability to score both inside and from the perimeter. The Apaches also demonstrated their quick defense and tight on-ball pressure, with Da'Lonna Choice setting the tone by forcing multiple turnovers from the Texan point guard.
However, the momentum shifted in the second quarter as the Apaches struggled to find their rhythm offensively. The shots that had been falling in the first quarter just wouldn't drop in the second, and the Texans took advantage. South Plains capitalized on missed opportunities, rebounding and transitioning quickly down the court. Several of their points came on uncontested fast-break layups, as the Texans pushed the ball past half court before the Apaches could get set defensively. By halftime, the Apaches were trailing 29-40.
Foul trouble plagued the Apaches throughout the game, with several key starters picking up early fouls. Despite the adversity, Monica Bottley continued to stand out with her hustle and determination, providing a spark for the team in the second half. Each time the Apaches appeared to close the gap, the Texans went on a hot streak, knocking down shots and executing fast breaks that widened the score. By the end of the third quarter, the Apaches found themselves down 45-58.
The fourth quarter mirrored the third, as the Apaches continued to struggle with fouls and transition defense. Despite some solid efforts to rally, South Plains kept control of the game, maintaining their lead to secure the 76-55 victory.
The Apaches will look to bounce back in their next game of the Herb Richardson Classic as they continue to develop chemistry and refine their defensive and offensive strategies.
