Apaches Down Angelina in First Round

Tyler Junior College held off Angelina College for a 67–64 victory Thursday night in the quarterfinal round of the Region XIV Men's Basketball Tournament. 

Tyler led 39–38 at halftime before outscoring Angelina 28–26 in the second half to secure the three-point win.

Chris Uwayo Jr. led the Apaches with 19 points, while Caden Bell added 18 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the field, including 3-of-3 from 3-point range and 5-of-5 at the free-throw line. Fareed Allim finished with eight points, and Josiah Hill added nine points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Tyler shot 51.1 percent from the field (23 of 45) and 50 percent from beyond the arc (9 of 18) while converting 12 of 14 free-throw attempts.

Clarence Payia led Angelina with 22 points, including four 3-pointers. Jordan Mathews added 14 points and six rebounds, while Julius Crosby finished with 11 points.

Angelina shot 48 percent from the field (24 of 50) and 28.6 percent from 3-point range (4 of 14).

With the win, Tyler advances to the next round of the Region XIV tournament.
