Bio

    Marcell Howard serves as the Running Backs Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Tyler Junior College, where he also serves as the Coordinator of Recreation Sports and Summer Camps. A United States Marine Corps veteran (Sergeant, Ret.),

Howard brings a disciplined, leadership-driven approach to coaching, emphasizing accountability, toughness, and complete student-athlete development. He contributed to Tyler Junior College’s undefeated 11-0 regular season, SWJCFC Championship, and NJCAA National Semifinal appearance, and in his first season produced one Division I Runningback and three All-Conference running backs.

A graduate of Montgomery High School (TX), Howard is a nine-year U.S. Marine Corps combat veteran (2008–2017), including a deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. During his service, he was selected for the Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program (MECEP), completing Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia, before attending Texas A&M University.  

Howard began his coaching career while on active duty as a voluntary offensive coach at Kalaheo High School (2010-2013) and completed a developmental mentorship with the University of Hawai‘i Football program under Offensive Coordinator Tommy Lee (2012-2013). He later served as an academic support and athlete mentor with Texas A&M Football (2015-2017) before continuing his coaching path at Trinity Valley Community College (2018), Navarro College (2022-2024), and Stephen F. Austin State University (2024). He also served as a biology teacher and assistant football and track coach at Nacogdoches High School (2024-2025) before joining Tyler Junior College in 2025.

Howard studied Animal Science at Texas A&M University and completed an Associate of Arts in General Studies and an Associate of Applied Science in Business Leadership and Management (Magna Cum Laude) at Odessa College. He is on track to complete a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences in Business Entrepreneurship in December 2026, is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and has co-authored peer-reviewed research articles in cancer research and molecular biology published in international journals. He is the father of one son, Hezekiah.
